I am in the research phase of a script; which means that this blog has changed course. It is now about my path into film.
As producer of SCW, I thought I would easily recruit crew members to write about their experience on set, but it turns out that writing is hard to do! So, instead, I offer my personal experiences, both on and off set. I share with you because part of my learning is writing. And wanting you. Needing you? Braving you! I am sorry, and thankful, in advance.
I imagine meeting you at the film’s debut. I dreamt about it last night, meeting the readers who have witnessed this unfolding story, from the beginning. IT IS FUCKING CRAZY…to know I will finish a film. But is there any other way of knowing?
Will you be in the audience? Perhaps no one will be in the audience. As a retired athlete/dancer, I profess to have a knack for making and performing messes of meaning— that only a few people witness. It was a lonely job, with a lesser-known job title, as defined by the famous mythologist:
Bill Moyer: Who are today’s shamans?
Joseph Campbell: Artists!1
As a filmmaker, I’ll be fine with the shaman role, but I’m done with the lonely part. Perhaps I produce a shitty mess, a slithering failure, but heck, I want to be in the presence of the disgruntled masses as their tomatoes whizz past my ears before splattering on the screen. I want the heckles and the boos! The value of making art to an artist is not fame or money, it is feedback.
Here is a short film, produced by SCW. I am full of pride, and gratitude for the rental houses that let me share 150K of commercial equipment with new filmmakers, supervised by pro, volunteer mentors. Please “wait for it”, as I stretch out the beginning. The actress-dancer’s presence remained on camera in between shots, so I included it in this director’s cut.
Please note: this is not “my film” mentioned earlier… my film is called June Snow and is to be the chronicled on this blog, along with more education posts from SCW productions.
